Jelani was out by the unlit fire pit, reclined back in a chair with her knees pulled up and a book in her lap. Just reading, with nothing but the normal outdoor sounds to keep her company. That is, before excited barks and Wylie's voice filled the air.
Funny, not long ago just sitting down to read a book in silence would have seemed boring as hell to her. But nowadays she had no problem differing between boring and simply peaceful. At least most of the time.
The dog came around the corner of the house and into view first, chasing a stick. A short moment later Wylie followed. She watched them fondly. Still together, still happy. Funny, how life changed.
